Hockey This Morning Showdown Pregame Audio Hockey This Morning Showdown Broadcast Audio Hockey This Morning Showdown Postgame Audio We got to the XM studios parking lot at 4:30AM in the morning. We were going to tailgate in the parking lot for a showdown against Eric from NY, a Rangers fan. Scott Laughlin and Shawn Lavigne arranged this showdown months in advance because they saw the rivalry between Devils and Rangers fans. And that Stevens and Messier are both being inducted into the Hall Of Fame, which both Eric and Sam were going to in Toronto. Why not have a shootout while Sam wears the martin Brodeur goalie pads. Settling the score in Toronto. We wanted to control our own environment and make the place look the "The Rock". We decided to post signs and Devils banners around the parking lot. The Xm guys parked in the streets instead. We even went as far as putting Devils highlights on their wall like the Rock in Newark. Day break. There was so much hype on the show and the listeners were giving their opinions on the shootout. It was to be a best of 5. We had the place setup. It was one of the most intimidating places to be around and as Scott Laughlin was on the air, we would try to throw him off by making funny faces at the window. We watched Devils highlights in the studio. One problem. Shawn Lavigne, Hockey this Morning producer, said that they did not have a net and they were waiting patiently for one to arrive. Then, John Melville bought a junior sized net last minute because his standard net did not fit in his car. Brought over in the nick of time. There were talks of going pond hockey style and using old boots as a goal. After getting in the goalie pads and directing traffic, the showdown commenced. We did a pregame interview. Everyone was out in the parking lot. Since I used a pink tape to tape my goalie stick, they deemed it illegal and I had to use a little kids' stick. Controversy in the beginning, but I had the advantage of a small net. First shot. Eric scores through the 5 hole and the ball went through the netting. The XM War Room's goal judges, Dan Blakely and Mike Ross ruled it a goal. Second and third shots: I made one key save and the other went wide. I am leading 2-1 Fourth Shot: Eric from NY pulled a Marek Malik move and scored. Tied 2-2. Fifth shot: Eric pulled it wide and I dove with joy. The people of New Jersey beat the Rangers fan 3-2 and we all went rejoiced. Post game: Tired and I shook Eric's hand as good sportmanship. The Greene towel is dedicated to Andy Greene! |
