1. Ducks owner Henry Samueli today was alleged by the SEC to have fradulently backdated stock options in Broadcom Corp., and Samueli promptly stepped down as Broadcom's chairman. I was reading a story about it in the L.A. Times , and it wasn't until the second-to-last paragraph that I finally read something I understood:
Broadcom, like many other technology companies, backdated grants to take advantage of lower closing prices, so the options already were "in the money" when the recipients received them, the SEC said. That allegedly allowed Broadcom to improperly reward employees without having to report that expense to its other shareholders, the SEC said.
The Times also reports that none of this will have any effect on the Ducks.

2. There are two dump-and-grind style teams left in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Both are trailing, 3 games to 0. The Red Wings and Penguins both play a much more wide-open style, with puck-handling defensemen starting each rush and speedy forwards getting way more chances on net than either the Stars' or Flyers'.

My question is, are we seeing the dump-and-grind reach the end of its rope? Do the Ducks stand a chance at winning another Cup with their hard-forechecking, defense-first style of play?

The thing that I think sets the Pens and the Wings apart from teams that play the "dump-and-grind" style of play is that the Pens and the Wings have proved that they can play multiple different styles effectively. I have to say I much prefer the puck possession type game to the dump and chase type game, but a team that can mix it up and do both effectively is always going to be harder to beat than a team that is one dimensional in this regard.
