The second period has come to a close, with the Flyers leading the game 1-0. After a very hard played first period, both teams settled down a bit and we're really seeing some great hockey being played right now. Despite snow settling on the ice late in the periods, causing the puck to bounce and roll a bit, it has been an extremely exciting game thus far. * More up tempo play in the second. The physical play has slowed down just a little, but not terribly. Just a good, old fashioned Flyers-Bruins game. Not a whole lot of room and a whole lot of hitting.
* Danny Syvret shoots the puck and sneaks the puck past Tim Thomas as Thomas is lunging and cross checking Scott Hartnell after a little slew foot by Hartnell. Very bad goal given up by Thomas, who let his emotions get the best of him after Hartnell knocked him over (not certain if it was intentional or not). Syvret just threw the puck on net and Thomas was nowhere near where he needed to be to make the save. It is Syvret's first career NHL goal, with assists from Scott Hartnell and Jeff Carter. 1-0 Flyers
* Thomas had a conversation with the trainers during the last TV timeout, so there could be something there with the Bruins' goaltender.
* Interesting note from Dock Emerick. The NHL changed from two 30-minute halves to three 20-minute periods exactly 100 years ago.
* Philly turned up the tempo quite a bit in the second, getting more and better scoring chances than in the first. Ramping up the tempo even led to the first powerplay of the game, as Chara went to the box for tripping after some good pressure.
* Boston showed why they are the number one penalty killing team in the NHL. Philadelphia had some good pressure, but never really got any traction on the powerplay and Boston killed it off with ease.
* The game has been one of surges, so far. Each team has had solid offensive surges so far, with Boston having one cut short by a fantastic defensive play that sprung Aaron Asham on a breakaway.
* Philly's transition game continues to benefit them in the game. Almost all of their best scoring chances so far this period have started with a solid defensive play or a great breakout pass.
* Boston got a lot more aggressive along the boards as the period wore on. They worked hard keeping the puck in the zone in board battles, but have also given up more room closer to the blueline, allowing Philly to really get their breakouts working well. |
