You've got to feel for the Carolina Hurricanes. Losers of two straight and sinking in the East, they drew the Ryan Miller-less Buffalo Sabres on Friday. But it doesn't matter who they're playing right now, really. On an outstanding night for goalies – including their own – the 'Canes didn't stand a chance.
1 Jhonas Enroth, Buffalo Sabres – Enroth needed 34 saves against Carolina for his second career shutout and first of the season. Thrust into the starting role after a concussion to Miller, Enroth is now 7-1. Too bad "Enroth Time" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
2 Jean-Sebastian Giguere, Colorado Avalanche – Look up the phrase "positional save" in the hockey dictionary and you'll find a picture of Giguere. Truth is, his 35th career shutout was probably like many of the first 34 – pedestrian perfection. It also helped that Avalanche limited the Stars to 24 shots, but Jiggy was good enough to spark questions of a goalie controversy in Denver.
3 Brian Boucher, Carolina Hurricanes – Boucher took the loss Friday but didn't deserve it. Only a greasy power-play goal separated his 19-save effort from perfection; the journeyman probably made tougher saves than Enroth and Giguere combined. Just another night in Raleigh.
Goal of the Night
I'm sure Curtis Glencross would tell you he planned it this way. Who knows, maybe he did. Regardless, let this goal be a lesson in perseverance to the next player who finds himself alone with the goalie, then whiffs on his first shot:
Save of the Night
Dallas' Mike Ribeiro shoots this puck on Giguere from below the goal line, which makes this highly unorthodox save possible. Time to dust off a joke about how Giguere's pads are too big?
