Different season, same results. The Sharks still have a line on the Detroit Red Wings and Marc-Edouard Vlasic had a career night in the process, with the Sharks blitzing the Wings in the second period in a game that won’t make the Detroit faithful any happier.
1 Marc-Edouard Vlasic, San Jose Sharks – Vlasic tallied a goal and three assists in San Jose’s 5-2 drubbing in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference semifinals. Antti Niemi stopped an unbelievable 40 saves and Torrey Mitchell, Brad Winchester, Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton tallied the other goals for San Jose, who won handily despite being outshot 42-28.
2 Niklas Backstrom, Minnesota Wild – Backstrom stood out again for the Wild, stopping all 27 shots he faced in a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Devin Setoguchi scored the lone goal of the game, but the play of the game went to Jan Hejda, bailing out J.S. Giguere with this save of a Nick Schultz goal:
3 Evander Kane, Winnipeg Jets – Kane scored twice for the Jets and had a game-high six shots in Winnipeg’s 4-1 win over their division rival Washington Capitals. Blake Wheeler and Kyle Wellwood both scored power-play goals and Ondrej Pavelec stopped 31 shots to give Winnipeg the win.
Play of the Night
The Caps missed on their odd-man rush chance, but Blake Wheeler’s hustle turned the play into a rush and a goal for the Jets:
Save of the Night
Ben Scrivens makes this gorgeous save to rob Mike Fisher of what would have been a beautiful goal:
Minus of the Night
This is just painful to watch. Craig Smith misses a wide open net, right from the top of the crease:
Fight of the Night
And finally, sticking with the apparent Toronto/Nashville theme, Jay Rosehill and Brian McGrattan throw down in the fight of the year so far:
