The NHL will have two outdoor games in the 2010-11 season.

In addition to the Winter Classic between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins at Heinz Field on New Year's Day, the Montreal Canadiens will play the Flames at Calgary's McMahon Stadium on Feb. 20, 2011.

"Based on the sense we're getting there's a real desire for us to do another outdoor game," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday. He said the league wanted to ensure fans north of the 49th parallel that they have not been forgotten.

The Heritage Classic will be the first outdoor game in Canada since Montreal played at Edmonton on Nov. 22, 2003.

Among the other highlights of Bettman's press conference:

• The salary cap will rise "a lttle over $2 million" if the NHL Players' Association votes to approve a 5 percent "escalator clause," whereby the cap rises as league revenues rise. The union approved an escalator clause last season, when the cap was set at $56.8 million.

• The Phoenix Coyotes will be staying in Glendale for the 2010-11 season. He expects the city to reach an agreement with a new owner within weeks.

• Bettman said he believes Winnipeg has an NHL-ready building in the MTS Centre and, while another is being discussed for Quebec City, the league has no desire to expand to these markets or relocate any existing teams.

• The schedule will include three games in Europe, from Oct. 7-10: the Columbus Blue Jackets against the San Jose Sharks in Stockholm, Sweden; the Carolina Hurricanes vs. the Minnesota Wild in Helsinki, Finland; and the Boston Bruins vs. the Coyotes in Prague, Czech Republic.
