The Philadelphia Flyers might not have needed Jeff Carter or Ian Laperriere on Saturday – but having two of their standout forwards back in the lineup sure didn’t hurt.

Claude Giroux scored twice, Ville Leino added a goal, and Michael Leighton needed only 17 saves for the shutout in the Flyers’ 3-0 victory. Philadelphia leads the best-of-seven series three games to one.

Montreal exploded for five goals to win its first game of the series two days earlier, but Leighton bounced back to record his third shutout of the playoffs. He was helped by a Philadelphia attack that blocked 27 shots and outshot Montreal 25-17 at the Bell Centre.

“We’ve responded from losses all year,” Flyers captain Mike Richards said. “Tonight’s no different.”

Giroux did not get the Flyers on the board until 5:41 of the second period, skating around defensemen Josh Gorges and Claude Giroux after Kimmo Timmonen recovered a Canadiens turnover in the neutral zone.

Chris Pronger was the beneficiary of another Montreal giveaway later in the period; he recovered the puck in the defensive zone and promptly made a long pass to a streaking Leino, whose goal made it 2-0 at the 14:53 mark.

Giroux scored into an empty net with 1:13 left into the third period.

Carter, a 33-goal scorer in the regular season, missed the first three games of the series with a foot injury. The veteran Laperriere resumed his agitator role after missing 10 games following a concussion. They replaced Daniel Carcillo and Andreas Nodl.

“We played with a full lineup,” Richards said. “Checking out the minutes played, we rolled the lines pretty good. … We can throw anybody on the ice at any time.”

Game 5 is at the Wachovia Center on Monday. Montreal has recovered from elimination situations to beat the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins already in these playoffs.

“We want to stymie that and make sure we put our foot on the throat,” Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger said.

martin – the trouble where we didn’t get the puck in deep in the 2nd period. We turned the puck (over) numerous times. we played in a, what do you call it, danger zone. The blue lines are usually the danger zone. Your own line, you have to get pucks out. The offensive blue line, you have to get it in deep. both goals in the 2nd period were turnovers on our part. They paleyd a strong game today. They did a lot of little things right. We have to regroup. We know how we have to play. we need certain areas of our game to be better. we’ll analyze this game today, dissect it, bring some solutions and be ready to compete Monday night.

Laperrierre – if I don’t play that way, I’m not effective to my team. that first penalty .. kind of got me going. I don’t like to take a hit. Tonight, I take that first hit. That’s what the neurologist told me. If there

Ricahrds – we playd with a full lineup. Checking out the minutes played, we rolled the lines pretty good. Lappy’s obv an emotional guy, which we feed off of. It’s just rolling four line, havinge everybody in the lineup. We can throw anybody on the ice at any time. We’ve responded from losses all year. Tonight’s no different. We got the puck in deep, cycled, didn’t turnt he puck over, we had success.

Pronger – we’ve got a team now down 3-1, We’ve got to focus on being closers. (They’ve had their backs against the wall … against Washington and against Pittsbrgh … and come back. …) We want to stymie that and make sure we put our foot on the throat.
