The Philadelphia Flyers significantly relieved their salary-cap burden Monday, trading their longest-tenured player and former 40-goal scorer Simon Gagne to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenseman Matt Walker and a fourth-round pick in the 2011 draft. Gagne was due $5.25 million next season in the final year of his contract. Walker has three years at an average of $1.7 left on his contract, a net savings of $3.55 million for Philadelphia. According to capgeek.com, the Flyers now have just over $1 million to spend under the $59.4 million cap ceiling. A Flyer since he entered the league in the 30-year-old Gagne is a proven sniper when healthy. He scored a career-high 47 goals in 2005-06 and 41 goals the next season. But health has always been a concern. Injuries limited Gagne to 58 games in 2009-10, when he scored 17 goals and 40 points. He also had nine goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games as the Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals as the eighth seed in the East. An eight-year veteran, Walker had two goals, five points and 90 penalty minutes in 66 games last season. |
