Former Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils coach Pat Burns succumbed to a long battle with cancer Friday. He was 58.

A three-time winner of the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year, Burns is the only coach to have won the award with three different teams. He won his only Stanley Cup behind the bench of the New Jersey Devils in 2003 and leaves a legacy that also includes 501 wins and an arena in Quebec, currently under construction, that will bear his name.

Burns had been in declining health since he was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2009. He was in good enough spirits to refute a false report of his death in September.

"Just as they will remember Pat for his success as a coach, hockey fans also will remember his humor, his honesty, his humanity and his courage," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. "As it mourns the loss of an outstanding contributor to the game, the National Hockey League sends heartfelt condolences to Pat's family and friends."
