The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenseman Denis Grebeshkov to the Nashville Predators for a second-round draft pick in 2010, the first of what is expected to be many deals for the bottom-dwelling Oilers as the NHL trade deadline approaches.

That was one of several deals completed Monday, after the league-wide Olympic trade embargo was lifted. The deadline to complete trades is noon Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Grebeshkov was due to become a restricted free agent July 1. He is owed $3.15 million this season. In 47 games this season he has six goals and 19 points, and has 16 goals and 82 points in 223 career games between Los Angeles, Edmonton and the New York Islanders.

The Oilers are scheduled to play in Nashville on Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Florida Panthers defenseman Jordan Leopold for a second-round 2010 draft pick. The 29-year-old Leopold was due to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. In 61 games this season he had seven goals and 18 points, and ranked second on the team at 22:25 time on ice per game.

"I knew it was a possibility that I would get moved out of Florida," Leopold told the Penguins' Web site. "The question was where and when. ... I'm really excited to join the Penguins. They're a dynamic team and have been the last few years."

According sources cited by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Penguins will move another defenseman before Wednesday's deadline. It might be free agent-to-be Sergei Gonchar, whose agent has called off contract talks until the end of the season.

The Anaheim Ducks sent Evgeny Artyukhin back to the Southeast Division, shipping the 6-foot-4 winger to Atlanta for minor-league defenseman Nathan Oystrick. Artyukhin had five goals and nine points in 37 games for the Ducks this season, but had been a healthy scratch in seven straight games, dating back to Jan. 29.

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound winger became Anaheim's fastest skater when he was acquired for Drew Miller from the Tampa Bay Lightning in the off-season. But he also lacked discipline, racking up 17 minor penalties – fifth on the team – and 41 penalty minutes. He was suspended three games in October for slew footing.

Oystrick, 27, was playing for the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves but had missed the past two weeks with a broken jaw.

In a swap of minor-leaguers, the St. Louis Blues added Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Joe Fallon in exchange for goalie Hannu Toivonen and defenseman Danny Richmond.
