Report: Briere 'shocked' by 3-game suspension Print

With about a minute left in Saturday's game between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders, Danny Briere and Frans Nielsen lined up for a perfectly routine faceoff.

Whatever Nielsen said to Briere before the puck dropped [video below] must have been outside the realm of "routine." As soon as the draw was complete, Briere delivered a two-handed cross-check to the side of Neilsen's head that fetched a five-minute cross-checking major, a 10-minute game misconduct – and on Monday, a three-game suspension.

"More shocked. I think surprised is not strong enough," Briere told the Delaware County Daily Times. "Honestly, I'm shocked. I honestly didn't think I would get more than, after everything else, all of the suspensions that have been handed out the last couple of years and this year, honestly, I didn't think I was going to get a game. Then I thought, ok yes I am a repeat offender, they'll probably give me a game because of it. I'm shocked that it was more than a game."

Briere was suspended for two games last season for a late hit on Colorado Avalanche defenseman Scott Hannan. He missed Monday's game against Carolina, Thursday's game against the Rangers and Saturday's rematch against the Islanders. He will also forfeit $237,804 in salary, which will go into the NHL Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
