"Free BizNasty"? At what cost?

Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney has placed an item on the agenda for Tuesday's NHL General Managers meeting in Toronto to titled "Social Media Policy," according to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

Why Maloney? Well, it just so happens that one of his players, Paul Bissonette, has more than 16,000 followers on Twitter and has already been disciplined for some of his outbursts. LeBrun writes: "The GMs will use this discussion to get their heads around players who are on Twitter and Facebook. Should there be guidelines? Should the league have a policy?"

On Twitter, anyone can subscribe (or unsubscribe) to another user's self-authored updates; on Facebook, one must give permission for another to receive the updates. Both websites have changed how information is disseminated, removing the filter between athlete and fan that teams' public relations departments were intended to provide.

Other issues, including past and future rules changes, are reportedly on the agenda.

• TheSportingNews.com reports that the GMs will discuss expanding overtime to eight minutes.

TSN reports that the option of a "coach's challenge" of official's decisions has been proposed by Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon.

• LeBrun also reported that the GMs will discuss the newly instituted (and sometimes controversial) Rule 48 governing lateral or blindside hits to the head.
