With the blockbuster deals all completed before the Olympic break, Wednesday's trade deadline was a time for housekeeping for the NHL's 30 general managers. Turns out there was plenty of housekeeping to be done. A total of 55 players changed teams in the course of 31 trades – both deadline-day records. The busiest of the general managers was Don Maloney of the Phoenix Coyotes, and even he was startled by the flurry of activity. "I got up this morning at about 5 and thought, I wasn't going to do a deal today," Maloney told the team's Web site. By the time the noon deadline had passed, Maloney had acquired Wojtek Wolski, Derek Morris, Petteri Nokelainen, Mathieu Schneider, Lee Stempniak, Alexandre Picard, Miikka Wikman and a 2011 draft pick. The biggest trade saw Wolski go from Colorado to Phoenix in exchange for former Hobey Baker winner Kevin Porter and former first-round draft pick Peter Mueller – who scored a goal for the Avalanche in Anaheim on Wednesday night. The day's other big swap involved a pair of Olympic defensemen. Anaheim sent Ryan Whitney, who won a silver medal for Team USA in Vancouver, to the Edmonton Oilers along with a draft pick for Slovakian sniper Lubomir Visnovsky. Most teams atop the NHL standings either stood pat or traded for depth. The Washington Capitals acquired Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joe Corvo and forward Scott Walker, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Milan Jurcina, and Minnesota Wild forward Eric Belanger. The Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks, the two best teams in the Western Conference, made no acquisitions at all. Here is a complete list of the day's activity, according to the NHL Players' Association Web site:
