Stopping a rough patch for a team, like Mike Smith and the Coyotes have started to do in February, is no small order. Doing so against a team like the Detroit Red Wings? Well, some might consider that to be next to impossible. Thankfully for them, it appears that Smith works for IMF.
1) Mike Smith, Phoenix Coyotes – The Coyotes have been in a nosedive lately, winning just three times in the month of January, so they’ve needed some big games from their big players. Monday night, they got just that from Mike Smith, who stopped 30 of 31 shots to lead the ‘Yotes past the Detroit Red Wings 3-1. Martin Hanzal scored twice for the Coyotes and Boyd Gordon once.
2) Phil Kessel, Toronto Maple Leafs – It wasn’t a shutout but, with their 6-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, the Leafs are now 5-0-1 in their last six games and are tearing it up once again. Kessel tallied two goals and an assist on Monday night to give him six points in his last two games. Clarke MacArthur, Jake Gardiner, Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul also scored for the Leafs and James Reimer stopped 27 of 30 shots for his third-straight win.
3) Bobby Ryan, Anaheim Ducks – With the Ducks pushing to get back in the hunt for the playoffs, Ryan scored a goal in regulation and another in the shootout to help the Ducks past the Calgary Flames 3-2. Matt Beleskey also scored for the Ducks and Jonas Hiller stopped 24 of 26 shots for the win.
Play of the Night
Sometimes there are some passing plays that are just so nice that they completely leave a goalie hung out to dry. Jordan Eberle got set up with one of those plays.
Save of the Night
Jonas Hiller had to reach behind him to make the save, but he did make it and it did win the Ducks the game in the shootout, so who’s complaining, right?
