Northeast Division notebook: Sunday could probably see the big return of Marc Savard to the Boston Bruins lineup, for the second time this season – but it probably won’t. Savard skated at TD Bank Garden on Thursday before missing his sixth straight game since he partially tore his MCL on Jan. 7. Savard missed 15 games in the fall with a broken foot. “I was out there today, and I’m like, ‘You know, I feel really good. Maybe I can play Sunday,’ ” Savard told reporters on Thursday. "But that’s not the case. I’ve got to watch it. You don’t want to come back Sunday and be out again. I’d be losing my mind. Not that I haven’t already lost it.” In only 28 games this season, Savard has nine goals and 13 assists. The Bruins have suffered a slew of other injuries, including Milan Lucic, who just returned after missing 18 games with a sprained ankle. “Maybe this is a blessing in disguise,” Savard told reporters. “We’re getting everybody healthy toward the end of the year and we can make a big push down the stretch.” OTTAWA The Senators re-assigned forward Zack Smith to the American Hockey League affiliate Binghamton Senators on Friday. He was recalled for the second time of his career on Jan. 8. ... Smith scored his first NHL goal (also his first NHL point) in Ottawa’s 4-2 win at Montreal on Jan. 16, marking only the third time in Senators franchise history that a player’s first NHL goal was short-handed. Smith collected two points on two goals and nine penalty minutes in eight games with the Senators this season. He was averaging 9:37 time on ice per game. This season the 21-year-old has also scored six goals and added 10 assists in 34 games with the B-Sens, for whom he shared rookie of the year honors in 2008-09. He was the Senators' third-round selection in the 2008 entry draft. … In other minor-league news, the club denied an Internet report that said they are moving their AHL farm team to Cornwall. According to www.sportstalkbuzz.com, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is looking to purchase the Binghamton Senators and move them to the Seaway City. TORONTO The lowly Lightning defeated Toronto 3-2 on Thursday night after Marty St. Louis scored on a one-timer with 10 seconds left in the extra period. The come-from-behind victory snapped a streak in which Tampa Bay lost three out of four games. ... Watch Matt Stajan's postgame interview. ... In order for the Leafs to make room for Ilya Kovalchuk's 10-year, $100 million deal, they might have pass on re-signing free agents Jonas Gustavasson and Ian White. Still, the Atlanta Thrashers captain has been linked to Toronto in trade rumors, frequently involving D Tomas Kaberle. But GMÂ Brian Burke has said he will not move Kaberle, who has a no-trade clause in his contract. MONTREAL Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau was listed in stable condition on Thursday after being admitted to hospital for unspecified tests. A report on Wednesday said that the 78-year-old suffered a stroke could not be confirmed. By Friday some news outlets were saying it was a mild stroke and Beliveau was recovering. … The Montreal Canadiens are expected to buy out RW Georges Laraque’s contract at the end of the season, after cutting the enforcer on Thursday. The 13-year veteran had one goal, two assists and 28 penalty minutes in 28 games this season. Because he has a no-movement clause in his $4.5 million contract, Laraque will remain on the team's roster. BUFFALO Coming off its best offensive performance of the season last Monday night, scoring a season-high seven goals in Arizona, the Buffalo Sabres lost to the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 the next night. The loss was the first for the Northeast Division-leading Sabres since a 5-2 defeat at Washington on Dec. 23 and it dropped them two points behind the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals. ... G Ryan Miller traded 22 saves in regulation with Kings G Jonathan Quick, but Buffalo lost 4-3 in a shootout Thursday after Quick made one more save than his Team USA counterpart. ... Jason Pominville played his 300th consecutive game against the Kings. hockey news, 2010 NHL Trade Deadline, olympic hockey coverage, hockey headlines, hpt radio, nhl news, nhl power rankings, hockey video, podcasts, world hockey, hockey headlines
