Northeast Division notebook: In the midst of its longest road trip of the season, the Buffalo Sabres hope to hold onto their comfortable perch atop the Northeast Division. The seven-game road trip began with a 2-1 overtime victory against the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday night that improved the squad’s record to 29-11-2. The12-day trip continues Saturday night with a game against the New York Islanders before the Sabres play five straight teams from the Western Conference. But that shouldn’t matter much: Buffalo is 7-0-1 against the West this year, and 12-6-0 on the road. The Sabres enjoy a 10-point lead on second-place Boston in the Northeast Division standings and are two points behind the New Jersey Devils for best in the in the East. OTTAWA The Ottawa Senators announced Friday that goaltender Pascal Leclaire will be out with a concussion for at least the next week, a day after Mike Brodeur saved 32 shots against New York to record his first NHL shutout and second victory. The win also snapped the Senators' five-game losing streak. The team recalled Brodeur after Leclaire was hurt during a 2-on-1 drill in practice. Brodeur, a distant relative of New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, got his first shutout one game after the Rangers were shut out by Martin Brodeur in a 1-0 loss to the Devils on Tuesday. … Captain Daniel Alfredsson (separated shoulder) told reporters Friday that he will decide on Saturday if he will return from injured reserve earlier than projected. Alfredsson hasn't played since Dec. 23. BOSTON Mark Stuart might return to the lineup against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Saturday. Stuart, who has missed 13 games with a broken sternum, played in 196 straight games since becoming a full-time NHL player during in the 2007-08 season. “At first it was really hard having to watch games,” he told the media on Thursday. “But then you think, ‘Well, might as well make the best of it.’ You get a different perspective when you watch the games from up top.” … Andy Wozniewski was called up from Providence on Thursday to replace Johnny Boychuk, who took a puck off the ribs against Anaheim on Wednesday. … Dennis Wideman was also injured in the 4-3 loss to the Ducks. … Andrew Ference is out with a groin injury. … David Krejci missed Thursday night’s 2-1 shootout win against San Jose with an undisclosed injury. MONTREAL The Montreal Canadiens' power play has finally worked its way back to being at the top in the NHL. Earlier this season the Habs' power play was uncharacteristically among the worst in the league. As of Tuesday they were the best in the league at 24.6 percent. One reason the unit was suffering was the injury to Andrei Markov, who recently returned from a severed tendon in his foot sustained in the season opener. But the special teams unit actually got going before Markov’s return, scoring six times on 13 tries in four games from Dec. 8-14. … The team officially inaugurated its Hall of Fame on Friday. Located in the Bell Centre, the museum explores the history of the club, its players and their achievements. TORONTO The Maple Leafs, last in the Northeast with 41 points, ended a four-game skid with a 4-0 victory against Philadelphia on Thursday night. The win was just the team’s second win in eight games. ... The Leafs tried to build on that success Friday night against Washington but lost, 6-1. ...
